How to Get The Most Out of Your Ceramic Painting

Clean Your Piece

Clean Your Piece

Ceramics are dusty or chalky in texture, wiping them down with a wet sponge can help remove any extra residue or dust.

Doing this can help get even more coverage and a brighter color finish.

Know Your Glazes

All glazes require a minimum application of 2 coats. Some glazes are meant to be sheer and some opaque. Check the label on the color you selected to know which one you have.

Best to start with sheer or light colored glazes. Try working light to dark. Working with one color at a time can make it easier to know which ones you have done and where.

Where Do I Paint?

For plates, cups, and other functional items, all surfaces must be glazed to hold food or drink safely.

Sketching a Design

Use a pencil to sketch any design on your ceramic piece. It will burn off when fired and should disappear.

Be careful, as it may smudge and discolor the sheer or light glazes.

Different Brands

There are differences between brands of glazes that you can use. We recommend using one brand per item you paint for a more cohesive look.
